The Chinese Navy Frigate Renders Escort to Mt. Stolt Strength

2009/04/26

The Chinese navy frigate Huangshan has provided the needy Mt. Stolt Strength, a Philippine chemical tanker of 32,400 tons, with food and medical supplies and is escorting the ship to safe waters.

On 25 April 2009, upon the request of the Philippine Government, the missile frigate Huangshan, one of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy vessels on escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia, arrived in the waters near Hobiya where it joined Mt. Stolt Strength. The tanker was released on 20 April after being seized by pirates for 5 months. It has been stranded after running out of fuel and adrift with low supplies for several days.

In accordance with the related resolutions of the UN Security Council, the Chinese Government dispatched its navy vessels on escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia starting from 26 December 2008. They have been protecting the vessels and crews of China and international organizations passing through the pirate-infested waters.
