The Chinese Naval Fleet Visited the Philippines

At the invitation of the Philippine Navy, the Chinese naval fleet composed of guided missile destroyer "Qingdao" and replenishment ship "Hongzehu" led by Rear Admiral Wang Fushang, Deputy head of the North Sea Fleet, paid a goodwill visit to Manila from 26 to 30, October, 2006. The fleet was warmly welcomed by the officials from the Philippine government, Philippine Navy and the Chinese Embassy, representatives from Chinese companies, Chinese students, the Association of the Philippine-Chinese Anti-Japanese War. During the stay of the fleet, more than 700 people from the Philippine government, Philippine Navy, Diplomatic Corp, Foreign Armed Forces attachés, Chinese Embassy, Chinese companies, Chinese students and Philippine- Chinese community visited missile destroyer "Qingdao". About 40 senior Chinese Naval officials attended the welcome reception hosted by the Flag Officer-In-Command, Vice Admiral Mayuga in the Philippine Navy headquarters. Besides, the Chinese Naval officers and soldiers visited Fort Bonifacio and Philippine Marine Headquarters and played football and basketball games with the Philippine Navy soldiers in Fort Bonifacio.

During the 5-day visit, Rear Admiral Wang Fushang and senior Chinese Naval officials paid courtesy calls on Speaker Jose De Venecia, Major General Bocabo, Vice Chief of Staff of the Philippine Armed Forces and Manila City officials. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral defense relations as well as regional and international issues of common interest in a cordial and friendly atmosphere. Rear Admiral Wang Fushang said that China and the Philippines were close neighbors only separated by a narrow strip of water, and had enjoyed a long-standing traditional friendship. He wished the visit would not only further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, but also push the bilateral defense relations into a new phase of development. Speaker Jose De Venecia pointed out that the Sino-Philippine relationship had developed quickly in recent years. China and the Philippines were now in a golden age of partnership and that the visit of the Chinese Naval Fleet was of great significance and could greatly boost defense relations between the two countries. He hoped both navies would keep a close contact with each other and work together to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Rear Admiral Calunsag, Naval Inspector General, Commodore Raul Ruivivar, acting Commander of Philippine Fleet, commenting highly on the visit, emphasized the ships and their sailors brought here the friendship and best wishes from the Chinese people. This visit has won fruitful achievements and reached a goal of deepening friendship, advancing cooperation and enhancing mutual understanding .

Mr. Deng Xijun, chargé d'affaires a.i., and Senior Colonel Liu Zhongxiang, Defense Attaché of Chinese Embassy participated in all the activities during the visit.
