Chinese Consul General to Cebu Visits Chinese Construction Team Participating in Rescue Operations in Southern Leyte

On February 18, 2006, Mr.Cui Luosheng, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate-General in Cebu travelled almost eight hours from Cebu city to Saint Bernard town in Southern Leyte province, which was hit by the massive landslide. Mr. Cui visited 9 Chinese construction workers from China Road and Bridge Corporation who are currently involved in the construction project in the province. Mr. Cui extended regards of H.E. Li Jinjun, Chinese ambassador to the Philippine and himself to the construction team and spoke highly of their participation in the rescue operations.

The villages hit by the severe landslide were just 13 kms away from their location. Just hours after the disaster, the team immediately joined the relief efforts. They took advantages of their expertise and machinery to repair the broken road and bridges and became the major task force in the early stage. Due to the bad weather and continuous rain in the area, the danger of more landslide still exists. However, Mr. Li Ke, project manager of the China Road and Bridge Corporation said that they decided to stay and continue give assistance to the local government for humanitarian purposes despite the danger.

In talking with Mr. Cui Luosheng, Hon. Rosette Y. Lerias, Governor of Leyte province expressed her gratitude to Chinese President Hu Jintao's for his condolences and the US$ one million emergence aid donated by the Chinese Government. She also thanked the Chinese construction team members for their timely participation and contribution in the rescue operations.
