Chinese Embassy Celebrates 2019 Spring Festival

On 29 January 2019, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China hosted a reception in celebration of the 2019 Spring Festival. Among the dignitaries present during the event were Former President and incumbent Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada, Senator Francis Escudero, Trade Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo,  Former Senator  Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and leaders from the Filipino-Chinese community.

                                                             

Ambassador Zhao Jianhua led the event with his opening remarks that extended his sincerest condolences and sympathies to the victims of the recent bombing incident that happened in Jolo, Sulu. The Ambassador also reiterated the Chinese governments firm commitment to the Philippines and its government's efforts in its campaign against terrorism.

                                                            

The Ambassador also delivered the message of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also reached out to those affected. "President Xi Jinping just issued his condolences and sympathies and expressed China's determination to work side by side with the Duterte administration in the fight against terrorism and in its efforts to deliver socioeconomic development in Mindanao," said Ambassador Zhao.

 

The Ambassador highlighted the memorable new chapter of China-Philippines relations in 2018. "Last November, Chinese President Xi Jinping successfully paid his first state visit to the Philippines and elevated our relationship into one of comprehensive strategic cooperation...China has been the Philippines' No. 1 trading partner and import origin, and the fourth largest export market...In 2018, the Philippines has received more than 1.25 million Chinese tourists, achieving a 29.6% year-on-year increase," said Ambassador Zhao.

                                                             

"This progress could not be achieved without the support and facilitation provided by the friends of China from all walks of life and the Chinese communities in the Philippines. On behalf of the Embassy, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your hard work and contributions," he added.

 

The Ambassador also marked the year 2019 as a new era for China and China-Philippine relations.

 

"The year 2019 marks the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China… Today, the Chinese people will write a new chapter of reform and opening-up in the new era. The year 2019 is also the first year after our relationship has been elevated into one of comprehensive strategic cooperation. Let us work  hand-in-hand to implement the important consensus reached by our two leaders, promote the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in a comprehensive manner, and forge an even brighter 'Golden Era' of bilateral ties," the Ambassador concluded.

                                                            

The celebration included a spectacle of performances such as a dance by the Chinese diplomats of the Chinese Embassy, dance numbers from the Overseas Chinese Alumni Association and other song performance. The guests were also exposed to various Chinese cultural traditions such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese Opera Mask painting and Chinese New Year's fortune charms and ornaments brought by the Confucius Institute of China. The event was filled with happiness and appreciation for the achievements realized by China in the past year and for the hopes of a brighter future in China-Philippines relations.
