On 20 December 2017, Counsellor Sun Yi of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines turned over the humanitarian aid in cash of USD 100,000 (5.1 Million Php) on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China to Secretary General Oscar P. Palabyab of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC). Counsellor Sun said that the Chinese side looks forward to the aid lending more strength to the disaster relief efforts on the Philippine side to overcome the difficulties caused by tropical storm Urduja which has hit the Visayas of the Philippines recently, and help the affected people restore their normal livelihood at an earliest date.

Secretary General Palabyab, on behalf of the PRC Chairman and Senator Richard Gordon, expressed sincere appreciation to China's goodwill and generosity. Palabyab also said that the Chinese side has always been the first to respond and extend helping hands whenever the Philippines and its people are in difficulties. The heart-warming donation once again bears witness to the friendly sentiments of the Chinese people towards the Philippine people, and will further deepen amity and mutual understanding between the two peoples.
