2019/01/04

On January 4, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Wang Yi expressed that Chinese foreign minister chooses Africa for the first overseas visit every year, which is a tradition that has lasted for 29 years. We will continuously adhere to it to demonstrate with concrete actions that China makes the solidarity and cooperation with developing countries, especially African countries, a priority in China's diplomacy. The AU is a banner for Africa's unity and self-improvement as well as its integration progress. Since the current China-AU relations have entered the best period, both sides should accelerate the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and strengthen integration mainly on the four aspects including the overall planning of China-Africa cooperation, peace and security in Africa, China-Africa cooperation in health, and coordination on international affairs, so as to forge a more robust China-AU strategic partnership.

Wang Yi said that China's development should benefit developing countries first, especially African countries. The Chinese side is willing to align the Chinese side's advantages with Africa's needs, especially integrate the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the AU Agenda 2063 in an in-depth manner, assist the construction of free trade zone on the African continent and the construction of the Single African Air Transport Market, expand bilateral cooperation in trade, civil aviation and tourism and work together to well build the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Peace and stability are the most urgent needs of the African continent. The Chinese side supports the AU in playing its leading and coordinating role and will help Africa improve its independent peacekeeping capabilities within China's capabilities and truly follow the African people's way to maintain peace and stability on the African continent. The Chinese side is willing to closely coordinate with the AU, maintain the rules-based multilateralism and free trade system, and safeguard the common interests of China, Africa and developing countries.

Moussa Faki Mahamat stated that Chinese foreign minister's visit to the AU headquarters at the beginning of the new year fully shows the high level and strategic significance of the relations between the AU and China. Africa-China relations are united and friendly, strong and powerful, and also mutually beneficial. The building complex of the AU headquarters itself is the crystallization of the solidarity and friendship between Africa and China. The AU appreciates the Chinese side's valuable support and assistance for Africa in reinforcing infrastructure construction and enhancing independent peacekeeping capabilities, adding that China's cooperation with Africa has set a model for international partners to cooperate with Africa. Once again congratulating the Chinese side for its successful hosting of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, Moussa Faki Mahama reaffirmed the AU's commitment to maintaining close communication with the Chinese side and earnestly implementing the eight major initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping to further promote Africa-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Sharing completely the same positions on major international affairs with China, the AU is willing to further strengthen strategic coordination with the Chinese side, and jointly safeguard multilateralism and maintain international rules.

After their talks, Wang Yi and Moussa Faki Mahamat jointly attended the handover ceremony of the Chinese-built AU Integrated Service Center project.
