PRESS RELEASE (2009) No.014 Embassy of the People’s Republic of China Four Filipino Fishermen Rescued by Chinese Cargo Vessel Four Philippine fishermen, stranded and hopeless on high seas for four days, were rescued by a Chinese cargo vessel named Heng Sheng Men, which happened to pass by the waters to the north-west of Manila at 10 am on 5 November 2009. “We are on the way from India to China,” said Mr. Wang Baoquan, Capitan of Heng Sheng Men. At 8:37 am on 5 November when the vessel was at 119°13′E and 16°13′N, the crew suddenly sighted four men holding floating vessel wreckage and calling for help. Heng Sheng Men immediately altered its course and began rescue efforts. Two hours later, the four survivors were taken on board safe and sound. According to their introduction, the four Philippine fishermen encountered the recent tropical storm “Santi” and their vessel sank on 1 November. They managed to hold on to some floating wreckage and had been afloat since then. The four fishermen received necessary medical checkups on board and were found in relatively good conditions. The Chinese crew prepared porridge for the fishermen since it was something better to start with for the people who hadn’t anything to eat for several days. The Chinese Embassy was informed of the incident at 12 am on 5 November and, without any delay, reported the incident to the Headquarters of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), which dispatched a rescue vessel to meet with Heng Sheng Men. At 6:30 pm, the four fishermen were turned over to the Philippine side. The fishermen and the PCG expressed sincere gratitude to the Chinese friends for their prompt rescue and kind help. |
